Classroom Rules

(2010-2011)

We will be establishing the rules together in the first week of school, but we usually come up with a list similar to this:

1.      Be kind.
2.     Be safe.
3.     Raise your hand.
4.     Follow directions.
5.     Do your best!

Behaviour Management Pocket Chart

You may soon be hearing about green “Good Behavior” cards from your child. It’s part of a system that helps students take responsibility for their own behavior in the classroom.

Here’s how it works: As a class, we created a list of rules for behavior. Then we set up a chart to track each student’s success. Everyone begins each day with a green “Good Behavior” cards in their pockets on the chart. Students who forget to follow the rules must replace their green cards with yellow, orange, or red cards.

  • A green cards means “You’re doing great!”
  • A yellow card means “Warning! Pay more attention to your behavior!”
  • An orange card means “You have a consequence” (for example, a time-out or losing a privilege)
  • A red card means a call home and a trip to the principal’s office
  • Periodically we will be sending home behavior reports on Fridays. Take a few minutes to review the report with your child. Be sure to praise all the “green” days – these mean your child followed every rule, all day long! Your praise will encourage your child to work toward even more green days in the future. Then, sign the report and return it to me.

     Apology of Action

We will also introduce the “apology of action” strategy. This method requires a child who has hurt another child to think of an action that will help the hurt child feel better. Then, after the hurt party has agreed to the plan, the child carries it out.

    Incentives

We will use various incentives throughout the year to promote good behavior. Verbal praise for “catching” a student cooperating and following the rules can be a huge incentive. We may also invite their classmates to be involved in a group cheer to validate their good choices. At the beginning of the year, students will be given a sticker book, where they can collect the stickers they receive for following directions and being prepared for class. Later in the year, students may receive “Moews Money.” These slips of paper will be deposited into a box for a draw at the end of the week. We may also have group or entire class contests, where points will be tallied and prizes given.
