In Grade One we will be practicing sight words. These are words that are used often in the English language, but do not always follow the "rules" of English. Each student will receive a list of words to cut out and keep together with a paper clip or in a zip-lock bag.
Keep these words at home and practice them at home a few minutes a day, before or after their home reading. Practice 5 at a time until those ones are mastered, and then move on to the next 5.
These groups of words are coordinated by colour. Every week they will be tested on how quickly they can identify the words. If they know the words well, they will receive the next list of words in a different colour.
The order of the colours will be red, yellow, white, pink, blue, and green. It is important not to move to the next colour before they have achieved instant recall. Students will start the year with a difficult, but important list of their classmate’s names. By the end of the year, the kids will be sight word experts!
Suggestions
- Cut sight words apart.
- Practice in small sections (5 at a time).
- Keep together with a paper clip.
- Store in the “Take Home” side of your child’s folder. There’s a section that only goes down half way.
